I was really expecting a lot when I got a chance to review this book. The information is solid. The plan is easy to follow. But as someone who has been working out for years it was too simplistic. I tried following the program but it was just not challenging enough. I also found the book was trying to be all things to all people. The title is The Catholic Workout and yet it offers variations for non-Catholic Christians. For beginners, or those looking to get back into working out, this will be a good beginning guide. The book has great photos that outline the exercises and guide you through them. The writing was well done and to be honest, I would read another book either on spiritual disciplines or physical fitness by Michael. But found this one did not do it for me.

Thanks for the review. I would like to hear any options you would recommend for those of us looking to re-ignite our health/workout routines. I know I used to keep up my workouts but as I enter my 40's, enjoy my 6 kids, career and healthy marriage my commitment to my workouts has disappeared. I am a larger shell of myself and just can't seem to stick to my workout routines…and when I do I feel as if I am screwing over my stay at home / homeschooling wife of some down time! I would love a scriptural reference point to motivate myself with. A Catholic man's take on how to balance, career, family, faith and the art of strength training without delving into the realm of vanity! Any ideas would be appreciated.
I would start with this book http://www.bookreviewsandmore.ca/2012/01/tending-… Tending the Temple it has lots of scriptural, catechism and quoes from the saints on building body mind and spirit. One thing I do is often work out with the kids. Take my kids to the basement and do my workout. Give them 2lb dumbbells and let them do sets with me. My kids also love the TRX and yoga. Or http://www.bookreviewsandmore.ca/2012/06/ten-comm… The Ten Commandments Of Lifting Weights – Jared Zimmerer using HITT training takes less time and gets great results. Alos one of the things I always think about, is being healthy and fit sets an example for the kids and also more likely to be around to server God and them. Just some jumping off points. Email me if you want more.
Thanks for the info and links to reviews. I also like the idea of getting kids involved and have been thinking about how to best do this. I think exercise is extremely important and the earlier you can get kids involved the better their long term health will be. I always did a lot of sport as a kid and really want my children to follow suit. I'll have to try and come up with a simple training plan that they could follow.
Good info!
