This isn’t meant to be a slam on anyone in particular, but I wonder if the Catholic Dads blog has lost its way. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of blogging about being a Catholic Dad anymore. Instead there are a lot of posts about the sort of random stuff people should probably put on their own personal blogs.

Am I off base? Have I misunderstood what this blog is about? If so, I’ll just shut up and move along. But for a while there seemed to be a lot of good posts along the lines of what I’m thinking.

Maybe there should be guidelines that more explicitly outline what type of content goes here. I know the short summary there on the right gives a pretty broad description, but I don’t know if that works.

Anyway, I thought I’d bring it up for discussion if anyone else wants to talk about it.

    You have a good point.

I agree that I would like to see some more Catholic dad oriented posts. Perhaps there should be some sort of regular request on topics with members invited to post on the topic.Of course the hard part is coming up with a steady stream of topics for discussion.

Well this is to help build up Catholic dads. Right? So to an extent that may include struggels we are going through involving family and/or faith. that has been my understanding.

Adam, agreed. But (very long) stories of dubious encounters with the police? Jokes and funny photos? I don't think there can be a hard and fast line, but some broad guidelines might be in order. Unless, of course, that's not what people want.

    I agree

As a new dad, I've gotten a lot of great parenting tips from http://www.dadlabs.com/ . It's a fantastic resource, I highly recommend it. Jeff

I plead guilty to posting jokes, funny photos and other stuff not specifically Catholic oriented. Using what you yourself have described as broad guidelines, I've just thrown in whatever might interest "Dads" in general. If the focus needs to be more narrow I've no problem with it. I'd caution against getting TOO narrow though. At a guess I'd say the members of this blog span the spectrum of Catholicism, from those who rigorously follow the Catechism down to dotting all "i's" and crossing all "t's", to those who cheerfully embrace all doctorinal/liturgical variations. Being exclusive is fine, being narrow minded would just put this blog in the same category as too many others.

Has anyone given thought to having a weekly "Catholic Dads Carnival" where we submit posts (or have one big roundup post with links back to posts at our own blogs) that are particularly relevant to Catholic fatherhood? You see such "carnivals" at other themed blogs such as those pertaining to homeschooling, etc.

Is this post on topic? I can't find where it has anything to do with being Catholic or being a dad.

  10. Domenico Bettinelli says:

Yes, it is on topic, since it's about writing about being a Catholic Dad. Your post, however, is not on topic.

  11. Adam the Catholic says:

Did I miss something on tony's post? I'm a little lost on the last two comments. (If it's something obvious please cut me a little slak, Just finished 14 hr shift. "Kinda" tired)????

The point I was trying to make in a somewhat "St. Jerome", sarcastic kind of way, was that this post had nothing to do with being Catholic or being a Catholic dad, but was about what we were allowed to write, by the powers that be designated later by Dom, about being a Catholic dad.So really, discussing what is and isn't appropriate on this blog is off topic, and should be taken off line (as I have done in the past with the owner of the blog when I've had issues with appropriateness of content). This sort of thing has the potential to hurt people's feelings unnecessarily simply by the timing of the post (one might think one of the last few entries triggered Dom's ire).

I thought that since we're all "big boys" and that we're all contributors to this blog, this is a topic that should be openly discussed by all he contributors. If I just sent an email to Rob, then only Rob would read it. Would you rather that only Rob make decisions about the direction of the blog? And if discussing the direction of this blog is not on topic for this blog then nothing is. I don't think we need to split hairs. I'd leave the St. Jerome imitations to St. Jerome.I'm not saying it caused me "ire" but it was indeed Dutchman's post that prompted me to write. I'd been noticing a shift away from the original direction of the blog and his long post on what seemed to be off topic prompted me to write.I'm sorry if anyone had their feelings hurt I'm sorry, but that's the truth of my motivation.

This is getting more dramatic then what it should be. We're grown men right? THEN LETS START ACTING LIKE IT!!! If it is obvious there is no intent to insult someone, quit crying and suck it up. I'm sorry for being so blunt, but ca-mon. Take a step back and read all this from a point of view of a visitor.
