My daughter asked that I share information about a local pregnancy counseling center with the Catholic Dads readers. She has pulled together from a project she worked on as part of her 8th grade religion class. I told her I would if it was something that would be appropriate to this venue. I think she succeeded, and I include her work below.
A thirteen year old girl went into the La Habra Life Center for a pregnancy test. While waiting for the test results, she expressed that she was tired of her promiscuous behavior and said that she was going to stop it. Her test came back positive and she broke down and cried. She said she wanted an abortion because she was afraid of how her mom was going to react; her dad was not in the picture. After talking to the counselor and with the help of the Life Center, she decided to tell her mom and give life to her baby. Her mom was disappointed in the pregnancy, but accepting of her and her baby. Luckily, the baby’s father was also very supportive, asking her to choose life for her baby. She appreciates what the Life Center has given her, and now she sends all of her friends to the center so that they can feel the same care that she had received.
During a recent service project I did at the La Habra Life Center I learned about the story above and how women in the community depend upon the Life Center and how the Life Center in turn, depends on the community to help women in need. I am writing to tell this group of Catholic Dads how they can help their local Life Center. Life Centers depend on the donations of the community. These donations come in three different forms. First are the monetary donations. Centers such as these cannot operate without the necessary funds to pay their bills and purchase needed items. Second are the material donations. These are maternity and baby items. Maternity clothes are a much needed, but often overlooked donation item. And as dads, you know all the things that babies need, especially in their first year – clothes, cribs, car seats, toys, high chairs, playpens, swings, as well as, diapers, wipes, bottles, formula and baby food. The Life Center accepts all these items to give to those women and families who need them. Last is the donation of time. Volunteers are needed for all types of activities that a small staff of workers cannot accomplish on their own – mailings, filing, sorting and organizing donated items, as well as working the different fundraisers a Life Center may hold to raise funds.
Life Centers are there for everyone who is having a new addition to their life. They are there to provide support for the mother, child and family. They show empathy towards every girl who comes in, they help her with her issues at hand, and they empower her to live a healthier, chaste life. Life Centers provide the necessities that mothers need for their babies; but, it is the community that must provide for the Life Centers. Please donate to your local Life Center!
The Life Center she is talking about is part of International Life Services. You can click here if you would like to donate to that worthwhile organization.
