As you have probably already figured out Catholic Dads Online is going through a “Growth Spurt.” This website has always been an awesome collection of Catholic Dad Bloggers, and now it is getting even better! Changes of all sorts will be coming, as the “board” looks to make this place a vibrant community of fraternal Catholic Fatherhood.

The first major change you will see is more content, more frequently. That is where I, and a few others, step in. We have been tapped to write a weekly feature. This will be similar to a newspaper column. You will get the same writer, with a certain theme, writing on the same day of the week, every week. If you read other Catholic group blogs you will recognize this as a regular method of operation.

The title and theme of my featured articles will be: “Battle Ready” If you have read my blog, Defend Us In Battle, you will understand why I chose the title and probably know a little bit of what to expect. If you haven’t, let me give you some insight.

As Catholics, we are familiar with the idea that Jesus is the “Prince of Peace.” Why then do we so much pain, war, despair, struggle, and strife in our lives? Do you know that Jesus, the “Prince of Peace,” also gave us another message? One that wasn’t as warm and fuzzy?

Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword. For I have come to set a man ‘against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one’s enemies will be those of his household.” Mt. 10:34-36

Those are some pretty bold words, and they aren’t the only of their kind. We read and hear of Battle imagery throughout the bible. Many times from Christ and His disciples mouths. So what does this mean for us? Are we called to strike out on some Holy War? Are we supposed to forward the next Crusade? Maybe we are simply asked to be: “BATTLE READY.

Every week I will be writing about spiritual warfare, cultural issues, family issues, liturgical issues and various other things that we are at war with on a daily basis. As Catholics, and especially as Catholic Fathers, we are called to be defenders of the faith, and defenders of our families. In doing so, we know that we have big, bright, red targets on our backs simply because we follow Christ.

You will be hated by all because of my name… Mt. 10:22a

I know what it is like to be out there, on the front lines facing a world that hates you, while at the same time trying to co-exist as a matter of obedience and survival. I know how difficult it is to reconcile living as a Catholic and at the same time participating in a culture that is opposed to everything you believe in, and espouses principles and values that are contrary to the very essence of your being. I was once lost in that world, consumed by the enticements and trickery of the devil. I remember waking up one day, and realizing that I was standing in the midst of a battle, where one side wanted to save me, and the other side wanted the eternal destruction of my soul. It wasn’t until I took that concept seriously that I was ready to fight. And I certainly couldn’t fight until I put on the armor of God so that I was able to repel the attacks, and defend myself in battle. Hopefully I can help guide others to do the same.

So join us here at Catholic Dads Online, every TUESDAY for a weekly installment of “Battle Ready” where I hope to publish posts that give you some of the tools and weapons necessary to go out into the world as a Catholic and be able to defend the faith and your family. This content will be specific to this website, and we hope that it will inspire comments, emails, and an expanded readership.

St. Michael the Archangel & all the angels of heaven, defend us in battle, and make us…

BATTLE READY!

  1. Nice, Joe. Looking forward to the additional advice, as we have long believed in St. Paul's admonition to readiness in Ephesians 6:

For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

  2. "I was once lost in that world, consumed by the enticements and trickery of the devil." I can totally relate to that in every way under the sun.

  3. Ben Trovato says:

One of the great things about understanding we are in a battle is that our kids, especially sons, respond really well to this. It helps them understand so much, but also appeals to their romanticism, their heroism, and so on.

    Looking forward to further instalments.
