In this series of posts, I will be focusing on keeping kids Catholic. Just to be really clear about this, I don’t believe in helping kids decide what’s best for them – and if that’s Catholic, fine. I do believe that the Catholic Church is the one true Church founded by Christ to continue and apply His great work of salvation. For that reason, remaining Catholic isn’t something I would prefer my kids to do. It’s something I see as core to my role as their father.

It’s a subject I feel very strongly about, for a number of reasons. My parents were both converts, and raised a large family. Some of us stayed in the Faith and some did not. That was a source of real sorrow to them. Likewise, I went to a Catholic School in London, England, run by Benedictines. Most kids there lost their Faith. I have many Catholic friends with kids older than ours. Some of them have helped all their kids keep their Faith (and nurtured vocations to the religious life); others have seen some kids keep their Faith and others lapse; and some others have had kids leave the Faith and then re-discover it.

I have watched all this with great interest, keen to learn what I can. As I write, I have 4 kids: Antonia (19) is at University, and Bernadette (17), Charlie (14) and Dominique (11) are all at school. At present (though I don’t want to tempt Providence) all are still keen on their Faith.

So in these posts I hope to explore what I think I have learned from my own and others’ experience; reflect on some of the underlying theology of being a Father and raising Catholic kids; and stimulate some discussion with readers of this blog: I don’t claim to know all the answers by any means, and am keen to learn as I go: raising Catholic kids is a project with eternal consequences!

PS Ben Trovato is not my real name, and likewise I have made up my wife’s and kids’ names. I do not think it fair to write about them in a way that may get very personal, if they can be identified.

Thanks Nod – I'll be on Mondays – probably should have said that! Looking forward to your feature too.

  3. Ben, you picked some excellent fake Catholic names!

Can't wait to read your posts… as this really is THE challenge.
