I recently became aware of a service that is available to Catholic parents looking to grow healthy, faithful families in the midst of an entertainment and media environment that is hardly aligned with such goals. The service, called Culture Gauge, proposes to provide parents the information needed to successfully navigate the environment without being overly permissive or overly restrictive.

The service is run by Jim Havens who has an MA in Theology from Franciscan University, has worked as youth minister, and been a Catholic radio show host.  Rather than trying to navigate the culture alone, Culture Gauge offers expertise to help parents get through. Their bottom line is best summed up by this line on their site:

“While hiring a personal researcher with a strong education in media, theology and philosophy would cost more than $1,000 per week you can have this same research for less than $1 per week”

It is certainly worth a look.  My wife and I will be reviewing the site and will come back with a review in a matter of a few weeks.  Stay tuned for that, but in the meantime you may want to check out the site for yourself at www.culturegauge.com.  There is a link for a free newsletter you can sign-up for as well if you do go over and kick the tires.

If anyone has experience with the site, or does give it a try after reading this, please share your thoughts.

Looks like a great resource there. I've signed up for the newsletter and will see how it goes. This page – http://www.culturegauge.com/planning_for_victory/… – has some great common sense tips.

  2. I’ve signed up for the e-newsletter, too. We’ll see what happens.

I like the tips, as well, especially this one: Foster Silence. I know we need to work on that!
