Family Foundation Call For NFP Dads

Christian Basi is a free lance writer for Family Foundations, a magazine distributed by the Couple to Couple League, a Catholic organization dedicated to Natural Family Planning.

Family Foundations has asked him to write a cover story for their July/August issue that focuses on Catholic dads and the challenges and joys they experience in raising their family and passing the Catholic faith to their children.

He has asked that I post an announcement here to find dads willing to contribute their stories.

Specifically, he is looking for Catholic dads who practice Natural Family Planning (NFP) and would be interested in discussing the following topics/questions:

  1. What has been one of your greatest challenges as a father practicing NFP? (Defending the practice? Explaining the Catholic teaching to your children? or??)
  2. How has/did using NFP affect how you addressed sexuality with your children as they grew up?
  3. How have you discussed your convictions with your children in such a way that they did not reject it or go away from the church?

Please contact Chris Basi at BasiC@missouri.edu.

My First Child…Lucy Marian

I have never posted before on the site itself; mostly because I my first child wasn’t born yet :)

So I proudly announce the birth of my first daughter:

Lucy Marian; Born: 21 Jan, 2010 @ 5:20am AKT; 7lbs 5.5oz, 20.5 inches

We had several names picked out but when she was born, she had her eyes WIDE open! (St. Lucy is the patron saint of eyes.) But the meaning is a little more than that. You see, Lucy comes from the Latin word for ‘light’ or ‘daylight.’ She was born in the dark of an Alaskan winter morning. The morning after my father passed away. He had been sick for sometime and my mom called me the morning of the 20th to let me know things did not look good. Obviously we could not fly home. Later that evening, I was about to pick up the phone to call my parents to let them know that my wife had started having contractions and gone into full labor. As I went to grab my phone, it rang. My mom informed me that my dad had died. It hit me like a ton of bricks obviously, but when I looked at the clock I realized that it was around 11:00pm down in Michigan. He knew… he didn’t wan’t to “ruin” our special day. That is just how he was. So I cried for a bit, my sister and my wife’s sister were here, and we took an hour to just grieve. But then as I know he would have wanted, I focused on my wife. 10 hours later our daughter was born.

So you see, Lucy is our lightness in the dark. They say the darkest part of

My Son…

Let me introduce Louis Peter Conan Doyle, born this morning. Above he is pictured with his big sister Madeleine, who will be 3 years old tomorrow!
Wendy did magnificently well, especially since Louis is a 9lb 10oz “boster” and will probably be bigger than me as soon as he’s 12 years old!! It was a home birth which made things a lot easier, and Maddy awoke from a nighttime slumber at 6:30am; just as Louis had arrived!

Be A Man Conference in San Diego Area

I wanted to let folks know about a Men’s Conference in the San Diego area happening February 20.  It is sponsored by a group called Share the Wealth, and you can get details here.  The conference is called “Be A Man, ” and is open to men only.

Fr. Larry Richards will be there and so will Dr. Ray Guarendi.  If you are in the San Diego area, or even if you are in OC, Riverside, San Bernadino or the Southern/Western parts of LA, you should register right away.  This one will definitely sell out.   Jan 22 is the last day to get the pre-registration price of $25, so don’t hesitate.

Personally, I am traveling over 2 hours to be there.  If you have heard Fr. Larry or Dr. Ray, you know why.   If you are going, let me know.  I’d love to meet you in person.

Fathers For Good on EWTN

Here is a news item I received from EWTN

If you are looking for tools to support your desire to be a better husband and father, then don’t miss this week’s “Life on the Rock” at 8 p.m. ET, Thursday, Dec. 3 on EWTN. Brian Caulfield, founder of Fathers for Good (www.fathersforgood.com), will talk about this initiative, the brainchild of Knights of Columbus’ Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. Tired of the lack of positive role models for fathers in the mainstream media and the denigration of manhood in many popular forums, Anderson wanted a way to showcase the deeper meaning of fatherhood in the life of the family and the Church. Did he succeed?

Kyrie Brand

Kyrie Brand - Distinctive apparel and gifts for Catholics and other Christians

My wife and I are starting a new business – Kyrie Brand. It is based on the idea that we are surrounded by, identify with, and even wear a variety of brands. The idea of Kyrie Brand is that we should be marked or “branded” for the Lord (Kyrie means Lord in Greek).

We have also found that sometimes there are great t-shirts that scream Christianity. These are great, in the right place. But sometimes, what we need is something that is appropriate to more occasions, something more subtle – perhaps an ichthys in place of a tiger or Nike swoosh on a polo shirt. Here is what is on the website about branding and the concept:

To brand means to label or mark. There are plenty of brands in our world today: BMW, Nike, Coke and DKNY, just to name a few. These are all brands that people willingly display as something that identifies them. Kyrie Brand was founded with that thought in mind. If we are willing to display our fondness for these material items, should we not be as willing to display our love of God? We wanted apparel that tastefully brands us as Christians, without being presumptuous or gaudy. Our shirts and accessories are of high quality materials and we take the greatest care and thought in our designs and embroidery to bring you classic styling, so you can mark yourself for the Lord!

The site also has men’s and women’s shirts, tote bags, as well as original posters, and decorative tiles
