Faith & Spirituality

Today is the feast of St. Joseph, patron Saint of fathers, husbands, workers and more.

In this post I share a parents prayer to St. Joseph and share links to more prayers and to an article written for today on imitating St. Joseph.

This is the second Lenten reader I am using this year. It is about twice the length each day of some others for the daily readings. It is an amazing little book. With a two-page read for each day of the liturgical season, it is broken into three sections. Each day has a reflection on one of the readings for that day, a prayer and a suggested penance.

This is one of two books I am reading during the Lent season in 2012. It is an amazing little book. It is available in booklet format from the publisher or in eBook from various vendors for just $0.99. It is only the second week of Lent and already this book has moved me deeply.

Every Body MattersGary ThomasZondervanISBN 9780310290810 This book completely blew me away. It was an amazing read. I think it should be in every church library and on every pastor’s desk. It is a wakeup call to all Christians that we are body, mind and spirit and that in order to love and serve God to [...]

My wife’s grandmother Kay has been in the hospital since Friday. Since then, her condition has changed from day to day and sometimes from hour to hour. It has taken a turn for the worse over night, and the family was summoned to the hospital this morning. We would appreciate your prayers should God be [...]

So yes, I am divorced. Its been over for about a year now. I tried everything I could, prayed for my marriage day after day, and yet in the end Hephzibah still left and divorced me. We went to counseling together and the whole nine yards. Unfortunately, we live in a fallen world and these [...]

Happy Michaelmas!

September 29th, 2011

Today is Michaelmas, a special feast for my family (St. Michael is our patron saint – and we all have a Michael or Michelle as part of our names).

While the feasts of St. Michael and the other archangels named in the bible (St. Gabriel, St. Raphael) were once separate, they have been combined with the date that was once for St. Michael alone. It is traditionally referred to as Michaelmas and was once a holy day of obligation.

RosariesRepetitious prayer is one of those “Catholic things” for which we receive criticism from other sectors of the Christian community. The scripture verse concerning “vain repetition” is often quoted as evidence of a biblical incongruity with Catholic practice. It is however not a conclusive argument, as Catholics point out that the vice is the vanity, not necessarily the repetition.

To provide alternatives to the excesses of our culture, a good start might be to unlock the churches.

I have a problem. It’s almost like an addiction that I want to feed again and again . . . .

I like to pray in a church.

When I pass a Catholic Church, especially an older one, I want to go inside and pray. It’s like someone is pulling me, inviting me to go inside, to get a taste of the riches and the pleasures offered within its doors.
